Start with the math, then order. Figure out how many tons your driveway, pad or drain trench will take, and the rest is straightforward with bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Wisconsin from Wisconsin Rock Supply. Most jobs around here start with traffic bond, the crushed dense-graded base that packs hard and stays put.

Materials Delivered Across Wisconsin

Start with the job, then pick the material that suits it. Here is what we haul and what each material is for, named the way Wisconsin yards name it.

Traffic bond is the workhorse. Wisconsin suppliers sell dense-graded base as traffic bond. Order 3/4" Traffic Bond for driveways, parking pads, and shed and patio bases.

Breaker run is the coarse layer underneath. Section 311 breaker run is stone run through a primary crusher to 6 inches or less, and it is used mainly for subgrade correction over soft or clay ground and for construction entrances. Cap it with traffic bond. Order Breaker Run.

Screenings are what Wisconsin yards call stone dust: fine, hard-packing, and the right bedding for pavers, patios and walkways. Order Screenings.

Clear stone is crushed stone with the fines screened out. 3/4" Crushed Stone handles drainage beds, backfill around foundations and pipe, and surfacing over a compacted base. 3/8" Crushed Stone goes finer for pipe bedding and permeable paver bases. For French drains and downspout runs, Drain Rock is the usual pick, with #57 Stone and #67 Stone close behind.

Natural Pea Gravel is the small rounded stone for walkways, play areas, dog runs and light drainage. Order Natural Pea Gravel. For decorative beds and dry creek beds, River Rock and Large River Rock do the work.

Sand comes in three flavors you will actually ask for. Mason Sand for brick and block work and paver joints, Washed Sand for leveling and bedding under slabs, and Washed Sand as a coarse blend for leveling.

Soil, fill and mulch finish the job. Top Soil is pulverized so it spreads fine, and plenty of buyers still call it black dirt. Garden Soil is a topsoil and compost blend for raised beds. Fill Dirt raises grade and fills low spots before topsoil goes on, and Shredded Mulch holds moisture in beds through the summer.

Ground and Climate Across Wisconsin

Soils change sharply across the state, and the base you build has to match the ground under it. That is why the same driveway recipe does not work everywhere.

Along Lake Superior, heavy red clay covers the low plain, with glacial till on hillier ground and sandy beach and dune ground in places along the shore. That clay is moderately well to poorly drained and stays wet, so drainage matters more than depth. In the northern glacial uplands, including the Northwoods and the Wausau area, frost goes deeper and leaves the ground later in spring than in southern Wisconsin.

The Central Sands is deep sand and gravel left by glacial meltwater, with peat and muck in the large wetlands and marshes. It drains fast. The Driftless Area and western coulees are silt loam formed in windblown loess over sandstone and dolomite bedrock, thin and stony on steep slopes, with sandy and silty river deposits on valley floors.

Around Lake Michigan, Green Bay and the Fox Valley, clay-rich limy till and old lake-bed clays and silts drain slowly, reddish near Green Bay and the Fox Valley and brown silty clay loam toward Milwaukee and Kenosha.

Frost drives the depth. The Uniform Dwelling Code requires footings at least 48 inches deep statewide, or below frost penetration if deeper. Frost goes deeper and leaves later as you move north. Work runs from the end of the spring thaw into late fall.

Where We Deliver in Wisconsin

We deliver across the state, from Milwaukee County and Waukesha County in the southeast out to Dane County and Rock County, west into the Driftless Area, and north through Brown County, Outagamie County and Winnebago County in the Fox Valley. Loads run to Racine County and Kenosha County along the lake, up to Marathon County in the central part of the state, and over to Washington County and La Crosse County.

That covers the ground zones above: the Lake Superior red clay plain, the northern and west-central uplands, the Central Sands, the Driftless Area, the south-central and southeast plains and Kettle Moraine, and the Lake Michigan, Green Bay and Fox Valley clay country. Sand, clay, loess or till, the material is the same; the base depth and drainage detail change with the ground.

How to Order and Size a Load

Order online. Pick your material and your quantity, then choose a delivery date at checkout. You can order by the ton or by the cubic yard, whichever you think in.

If you are not sure how much to take, run the numbers with a materials calculator. Measure the length and width of the area, decide how deep the layer needs to be, and let the calculator convert that volume to tons. A driveway base runs deeper than a top dressing.

Two things worth knowing before you order. First, depth minimums apply on thin lifts, because a layer spread too thin will not compact or hold. Second, if your ground is soft or clay-heavy, plan on breaker run under the traffic bond rather than adding more base on top of a bad subgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Wisconsin

How much gravel do I need for my project?

Measure the length, width and depth of the area in feet. A materials calculator will convert that to tons for the material you pick. Depth depends on the job: a top dressing is thin, a driveway base is thicker, and a drain trench is measured by volume.

Do you deliver to Wisconsin?

Yes. Wisconsin Rock Supply delivers bulk gravel, stone, sand and soil across the state, from Milwaukee County and Dane County to Brown County, Marathon County and La Crosse County, and the counties in between. Order online, choose your quantity, and we bring the load to the job.

What is the difference between crushed stone and Natural Pea Gravel?

Crushed stone is angular, with broken faces that lock together, and clear stone has the fines screened out so water moves through it. Natural Pea Gravel is small and rounded, which makes it comfortable underfoot and good for walkways, play areas and dog runs. Crushed stone is the better choice for drainage beds, backfill and bases that need to hold.
