Plan around the ground here. Lime-rich glacial till sits under a cap of silt loam loess, so a patio or driveway base has to drain and pack, not just fill a hole.
Start with the bedding under pavers and flatwork. That layer decides whether the surface stays flat through freeze-thaw or heaves in the first spring thaw. Traffic bond, sold as 3/4 inch traffic bond and specified as dense graded base, packs hard under a plate compactor or roller. It carries patios, shed bases, parking pads and driveways. Use 3/4" Traffic Bond as the structural base, then bed the pavers themselves.
For the bedding course, Screenings are the material Wisconsin suppliers sell as stone dust. They screed flat, lock the joints, and hold a paver course true. Around the edges and in the joints, #89 Crushed Stone sweeps in tight for hard joint fill.
Over soft or clay-heavy ground, put coarse stone down first. Breaker Run is the heavy sub-base for that job, usually capped with traffic bond. Where water has to move, Drain Rock handles French drains, downspout runs and drainage behind retaining walls. Washed Sand levels and beds under slabs and paver bases. Finish planting beds with Top Soil, or use Garden Soil for raised beds.
A thin base fails first at the edges. You see rutting along the drive, rocking pavers, and water sitting in the low spots. In this zone that usually traces back to silty loam over till, where spring rain and snowmelt sit near the surface instead of draining away.
Fix it with depth and drainage. Compact the subgrade, then build the base in lifts so each one packs. Give the base a solid depth under a patio and more where trucks or wet ground are involved. Sandy and gravelly outwash drains fast, so it needs less stone than the silty spots.
Frost drives the rest. Footings go at least 48 inches down under the Uniform Dwelling Code, and pavement frost can reach 48 to 72 inches by late winter. Silty and clayey spots heave and soften during the thaw.
Time the work. Base, driveway and paver jobs run from the end of the spring thaw into late fall. Posted county, town and village roads carry spring weight limits while frost comes out, and frozen ground stops compaction in winter.
Runoff is the other problem. Rain and snowmelt wash silty soil off bare slopes and cut into ditches and stream banks. Arm those with RipRap before the next storm season.
Pick your unit first. Stone, sand and topsoil sell by the ton or by the cubic yard. A ton is weight, a yard is volume, and the two are not the same for every material. Mulch and topsoil are lighter per yard than crushed stone.
Estimate before you order. Multiply length by width by depth in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For a patio base, run the numbers on the full compacted depth, not the loose depth.
Then place the order online and pick your delivery window. Bulk loads drop at the site in Iron Ridge and across Dodge County, including Beaver Dam, Watertown, Waupun, Mayville and Horicon. Have the drop spot clear and reachable by a truck.
Traffic bond is the standard base here. It is crushed dense-graded base, sold as 3/4 inch traffic bond, and it compacts hard under a roller or plate compactor. Cap it with Driveway Gravel for the wearing surface, or top an existing compacted base with driveway gravel when the stone below is still sound.
Measure length, width and depth in feet, multiply them, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Add extra for compaction, since a base loses volume as it packs. For a patio, figure the full compacted base depth plus the bedding layer, then order at that total so you are not short mid-job.
Run the numbers on the calculator before you buy. Enter your dimensions, get tons or yards, and order the material to match. Traffic bond, screenings, drain rock and topsoil all ship the same way: sized to your project, dropped where you need it in Iron Ridge. Order online when your quantities are set.

A clear, level spot the truck can reach and tip in, with nothing parked in the way and no low branches or wires over the approach. If the drop is behind a gate, tell us the width when you order. Soft ground after rain is the usual reason a delivery in Iron Ridge has to be moved, so point out anywhere the truck should not drive.
